At Laverstoke Park Farm we have the largest herd of Asian Water Buffalo in Europe, which now numbers close to 2,500 head. Although we do produce and sell buffalo meat the majority of this herd are dairy cattle used to produce our creamy buffalo milk. For years we have only produced full cream buffalo milk, but we are soon to launch our semi-skimmed buffalo milk which will be available at this website at our farm shop, or at larger branches of Sainsburys and Waitrose.
Why drink Buffalo Milk?
Other than because it is wonderfully creamy and delicious, some people who have a cow's milk intolerance have found that they can quite happily drink buffalo milk. Some people who have skin irritations such as Eczema have also found it beneficial. We do suggest you seek medical advice and try small amounts to start with to ascertain if you are OK with it.
What about BSE?
The Asian Water Buffalo is of a purer breed than most modern dairy cows and are less reliant upon antibiotics and high protein feeds. Our herd is from a pure stock originally imported from Eastern Europe and are all reared as close to organic standards as possible - they therefore remain totally BSE-free.
Buffalo Milk Dairy Products
Buffalo milk is very white and creamy and is ideal for the production of other dairy produce such as cheeses, yoghurts and ice cream. Here at Laverstoke Park Farm we use the milk to produce our award winning cheeses, buffalo mozzarella, burrata and buffalo ricotta cheese, as well as for our award winning buffalo milk ice creams. We now produce over twelve varieties with Grown Up Coffee, Dolce and Chocolate Mousse all having won awards (please note we also use some Jersey cream in our ice creams as well as alcohol in certain varieties). Soon we will be launching a range of buffalo milk yoghurts as well. We have even just launched our Buffalo Milk Chocolate, produced for us in conjunction with Artisan Du Choclat - it is one of the creamiest milk chocolates you will taste.
Soon to be launched a range of buffalo milk yoghurts.
Buffalo Milk Powder (Khoa, Khoya)
Laverstoke Park Farm can also offer dried buffalo milk powder, made using our own roller drying equipment. We are already using this in our own Buffalo Milk Chocolate, as well as supplying to other food industry companies. This powder, or Khoya (Khoa), is often used in Asian countries to produce sweets and desserts.
What Ocado & Waitrose customers have said about our buffalo milk
For Health Reasons...
For health reasons, I was advised to avoid cows' dairy products. I tried this milk and it is delicious. Even better for me is that fact that my 2 yr old daughter loves it too, didn't wince when I changed her milk from cow to buffalo.

Pricey ... but worth it for my child
I have no idea what this tastes like. I have never tasted it. It's way too expensive for me to indulge. BUT for my 3.5 year old son and my breast-feeding wife there is no better milk ! We order 15 cartons every week and stress when Ocado don't have it in stock. We often go into Bluewater Waitrose and completely clean them out. My son has gone from the 5th percentile to the 50th for his weight in the space of a few months while he has been on this. When we run out we sometimes supplement organic cow's milk with the Buffalo Mozarella from the same brand. Over THREE times the price of organic cows milk .. but worth every penny for my children.

A nice alternative to cow/goat's milk
This milk really is delicious and very 'clean' tasting if, like me, you find that goat's milk seems to leave a bit of an aftertaste. I like the fact that it hasn't been overprocessed (unlike some organic milk) and is not homogenised. It does have creamy/lumpy bits (oddly enough they seem to be at the bottom rather than the top!) and you are advised to shake it vigorously beforehand, but I prefer to up-end it a few times rather than risk churning it into butter! Definitely best to drink cold or on top of cereals rather than adding to hot drinks as the fat does tend to separate.
